Unit 73: Sound

What is Sound?
Sounds are what we can hear around us. They are made from Sine waves which travel into are hear and cause 3 bones to rattle, sending signals to our brain which convert it into sound
Examples of sound: Aircon, White Noise, Ocean

  • Wavelength = Frequency
  • Amplitude
  • Frequency is measured by Herts (Hz)
  • Amplitude measured by Lambda (λ)
  • Human hearing range is 20 Hz to 20 KHzImage result for high frequency vs low frequency
  • Middle 'C' key = 261Hz
  • Instruments that can play a middle c: Piano, Guitar
What is Foley?
Foley is the creation of sounds for media through the use of objects in real life to mimic the sound.
Timbre
Timbre is the characteristics and qualities of different instruments. An example is a piano and guitar playing the same note. They sound different

Loudness
Measured in decibels (dB)

Sound Source
A sound source is
Music: Not much in terms of music. This is to make the main focus of the game be the action, much like in many movies. Music appears in more intense moments such as when charged by hordes of zombies or when a Tank zombie spawns in.
Sfx: Sound effects used in the game consist of a few types: Gunshots & Explosions, Zombie noises and attacks/ hit sounds.
Voice: Every cha

Why is sound needed?
For Immersion
For atmosphere
To warn the player of events

Game Audio
FX- Level Up sound: Pokemon Black and white https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XdvY9E-9XE
This sound from the pokemon series is a quick, happy tune. This tells the player they accomplished something, in this case, getting a pokemon to a new level
Voice- Team Fortress 2 voice lines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG5VYKZx6Io&list=PLvVRXnxnXxLjTElolH85XeAyY9vEoVSwz

Music- Night of Fate: Kingdom Hearts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsIXDJ3t1uo

Psychology
In a forest:
Music: Route 29: Pokemon Heartgold/ Soulsilver https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACx9oNLvDcU
This music fits the tone of a calm summer walk through nature, and symbolises the beginning of a journey. This is because this music is used in the first route of the game: The first step on your in-game journey
SFX: Walking on grass sound effect: Minecraft https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtUPE9vc6_8
The sound of walking on grass in Minecraft is soft and Gentle sounding SFX, with each step having a soft brushing sound
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild
The sound design used in Breath of The Wild is very quiet and Reserved in many parts. When the player isn't in a landmark area such as a Town or near an open Great Fairy Fountain the music is quiet and peaceful, leaving most the sound design to the ambience of the world around the player. Though, the music also used for these areas also has a sense of dread and Loneliness. This was most likely done to reflect the post apocalyptic style of the game and reflect just how desolate this large world truly is.
Many pieces used in the game tend to be quiet, including may town themes and the stable theme. This was most likely done to show that even in areas of population in-game, it is still relatively quiet due to the events that happened before the game.
As for in game sounds, Many sounds the player can hear are environmental, made by the environments around them. This is so the main focus of the gameplay is the environments, which was a main part of the games development.

There are a few things that can limit Audio, including:
Sound Card- A less advanced Sound Card could lead to the Audio of a game platform sounding worse then another games platforms audio
Processing Power- If there isn't a lot of processing power
Speakers and Headphones

I will be using a Shotgun microphone to record Foley. I will used a set of keys and rattle them to make the sound of armour colliding and moving.

My game is called Adventures through Ragnarok, a fantasy RPG. The sound I recorded was the sound of armour/ Chain mail movement. This was made using a set of keys and rattling them to create the sound of metal colliding. This will be used when the player moves.

I also found that by reversing the audio, I can create a sound almost like a portal ambience.

Comments

  1. Plenty of examples. Perhaps add a few more examples to lossy audio formats. Perhaps add information regarding the legal issues involving distortion, what it means, etc.

Talk about each of these. Legal issues with sound should include voice, music, and sfx. Make sure you have multiple audio limitations e.g. surround sound 5.1 and 7.1.
